I know you like mobile games and I consider myself an addictive player and a Pokemon fan and the primary reason for playing this game was curiosity. Could they really make a compelling game surrounding Magikarp of all Pokemon in short, yes, they did! They manage to install enough charm and silliness to make it a fun little game. Let’s start off with that premise, like the main series games your trainer looking to take on your regions league it just so happens that the only Pokemon anyone uses is Magikarp and battles are won based off which fish jumps the highest.
Your carps jump ability is based on the jump power. This number is raised by feeding berries, taking a training or through various random events. The process of levelling up from Magikarp could have been tiresome and repetitive but fortunately that’s not the case.
Feeding Magikarp is very simple and clearing out your whole pond only takes about 5 to 10 seconds. The rate at which birds come back is pretty generously so you never stop staring at an empty pond. If you want to go training, you have to use one of your three training points. These recover over time or can be renewed as items. When you go train and exercise is randomly chosen and you’re rewarded with Jump Power.
What keeps us from being tedious as the random modifies attached to the training. Your carp can give a good great or amazing effort at the task at hand which increases the jump power gained by an appropriate multiplier. If you want to take on the league it requires a league player which recovers over time or with an item.
Battle takes place across eight different leagues which get more difficult as you progress through each league. Wins are rewarded with experience of coins and raising your training level allows for higher max level on your Magikarp which ultimately allows it to make it farther in the league. It also periodically unlocks to training at berries which rewards more and more Jump Power. They’re also the random events which can occur after training or league battles. Early on these will be simple resulting in a nice bit of coins, diamonds or bonus Jump Power.
As your training levels up more events can occur, some of which force you to make a choice. There are times where your choice might result in a loss of Jump Power or in few worst case scenarios, the death of your beloved goldfish Pokemon. Once your Magikarp reaches max level, it makes one last attempt to leak and then retires upon losing that final run. Dying also means that your fish has retired. Either way, you have to get a new Magikarp and each new generation Magikarp will gain Jump Power and creasing rate. A curb straights will often differ between generations which help keep things interesting.
Retired veteran will pass on some knowledge to new recruit and its short exchange of flopping and once that’s done, it will return to the pond spend the state swimming. A lot of parts of this game which is all over the place are the coins and diamonds. Both of which can be randomly found in the pond rewarded after the battles or can be gained from random events. Coins are used to unlock new foods and trading menus as well as upgrade their effectiveness.
Diamonds on the other hand are used for three different things: First, they can unlock new support Pokemon who will hang out by your pond and this is Magikarp in some way like the trading points, these have recovery periods. You could also purchase decorations for your pond which provide a static bonus of some kind. Lastly, diamonds can buy items to recover your trading points, League place, sport skill or just a bunch of coins.
As you might expect, there are microtransactions available if that’s something you desire. Personally, I have only done hacking to mobile games when possible. If you feel the same with it you should be happy to hear that you can get through the game without needing to spend any money.
The game naturally provides coins and diamonds at a rate which while minimal is enough to keep you from feeling starved with resources for upgrade items.
Ultimately, spending money on this game would mean that you would level up faster and it will shorten delay between training sessions and battles, so you basically trading money for time and that’s one of the few acceptable scenarios for microtransactions.
I have no clue how the game will feel as you near the end of league as how I’ve only played a quarter of it until now but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. Feeding your fish, taking a training and sending into battles, hold your attention while slowly operating your pond, progressing through the league and crafting a legacy of magic cards will keep you coming back for final. Also, there’s the mechanics in the game I’ve left out which I will let you figure it out on your own.
If you are all interested by this game, I recommend giving this game a shot. It’s definitely weird but it’s fun and you have the hack that will help you to level up faster.
